BCS adds Macau to Asian airport wins

The win is handled from BCS's recently-opened Kuala Lumpur office, itself a key factor in the decision to award the contract.

It also follows on from the association with US aviation consultancy BNP Associates which named New Zealand's BCS Group an approved supplier of high tech baggage handling system controls to airports around the world.

Self-service at airports: Tag, you're it

Airlines in other countries have already implemented such technologies. In America, Alaska Airlines has introduced self-tagging in Seattle and San Diego and plans to equip 10 airports in this way by the end of the year, and American Airlines is rolling out the technology in big airports over the next two years. Elsewhere, Iberia has 30 kiosks at Madrid's Barajas airport that can print baggage tags, and Qantas Airways issues permanent electronic bag tags.

Innovation without excess baggage

When Marc Michel arrived at Auckland-based logistics technology company BCS Group in 2007, he was amazed at the intellectual property he found there - technology he expects will drive the firm to finally crack the $100 million turnover barrier this financial year.

BCS is making inroads into the global market for baggage handling equipment, especially targeting Southeast Asia and South America, said Michel, the company's general manager services and solutions.

A new deal in Mexico is the latest example. Grupo Aeroportuario Del Pacifico (GAP), which operates 12 airports in the Pacific region of Mexico, chose baggage-handling technology from BCS for its showcase San Jose del Cabo and El Bajio airports.

Bag-carrying passengers at Brisbane Airport are enjoying quicker and easier self-service check-in as the airport uses the latest bag-drop system from technology provider SITA. Working with the baggage handling system specialist, BCS Group, SITA has begun an initial phase deployment at the airport which allows passengers to drop off their bags in less than 25 seconds.

Mike Hearn, executive director for AmCham, says 2012 has seen another strong group of entrants, covering a diverse range of products and services from water to wine, nutraceuticals to salmon, software technology to kilns and baggage handling systems.

"Trade with the USA continues to run around $9 billion however over the last year we have seen more New Zealand companies entering the US market, setting up offices and hiring staff," says Hearn.
